Phyllis June Hamilton, 94, of Lafayette, Indiana passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at St. Anthony’s Health Care. Phyllis was born on June 28, 1929 to the late Paul Darwin and Mary Elizabeth (Armstrong) Lamphire in Edinburgh, Indiana. She was a graduate of Edinburgh High School. She married James F. Hamilton on April 30, 1948. Phyllis did have a few jobs out of the house, but she chose to remain as a housewife so that she could take care of her children and her husband James F. Hamilton. She was a past member of Christ United Methodist Church, though she did not attend in person once age became an issue. She was always an avid reader, and enjoyed a variety of books (especially mysteries) up to her last day. She was an immaculate housekeeper, sewing hobbyist (specifically embroidered pieces and handmade quilt squares), the best pie crust maker from scratch ever, and a great bargain hunter that found treasures at Good Will and Dollar General. She was always a fun-loving character, learning to belly dance in her 60’s and even giving lessons. Her grandchildren remember burning incense
and reading Tarot cards just for fun at her house. She was extremely intelligent, even though she never got to attend college. She constantly challenged herself by completing difficult crossword puzzles, and she loved doing jigsaw puzzles that were very intricate and challenging. She loved music, especially jazz, and dancing, and was always wearing beautiful clothes and makeup. She was a natural redhead with beautiful curls that were the envy of her family.
Phyllis is survived by her children: Bethany Swisher of Lafayette, IN and Mitchell Hamilton of Baton Rouge, LA., five grandchildren; Sara Samudio, Patrick (Kim) Swisher, Eric Swisher, Amanda Hamilton, and Michael (Amber) Hamilton, and six great-grandchildren: Olivia, Michael, Alex, Lila, Sophie and Eleanor.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents: Paul Darwin & Mary Elizabeth (Armstrong) Lamphire, spouse of 69 years James F. Hamilton, daughter Deborah Dukes and brother Lowell Lamphire.
In keeping with Phyllis’s wishes, there will not be any services. Because of her love of family, she would appreciate you taking a day to spend with your family as a way to honor her memory.
