Thoughts and prayers for the family. When dad passed away I got several cards from Shirley letting me know she was thinking of me and knowing I was a daddy’s girl knew it was hard for me. It was like she knew right when to send the cards, they came when I needed them most. The last time I saw her was at the Wilson Reunion in Summitville. She told me she was just a phone call away if I needed to talk. She was one great cousin. I know she touched many lives.
Shirley L. Knight, 82 of Marion peacefully left this world for her heavenly home at 8:40 am on Thursday, May 20, 2021. She was born December 17, 1938 in Edmonton, KY to the late Henry and Elsie Wilson. She married James R. Knight nearly 62 years ago and he survives.
Shirley was an early childhood education teacher for over 17 years at Kiddyland Kollege. She was a longtime member of The First Church of the Nazarene in Van Buren, IN. From Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, missions programs, board member, to lawn care and other roles too numerous to mention – she was service minded and diligent to show the love of Christ to others.
Shirley was strongly committed to the values and principles espoused by the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and to educating others. She held various positions at the local and state level, including president of the local union for many years, leaving a lasting legacy.
Shirley fiercely loved her Lord and her family and cherished those relationships. Surviving with her husband are her children Jami (Mark) Fleming of Upland, Kevin Knight of Marion, and Jeffery Knight of Van Buren, 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a sister Margarett (Rick) Runyan of Summitville, IN. She sorely missed her sister Dana Hendrick who predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday May 26th at the First Church of the Nazarene in Van Buren with Rev. Jeff Slater officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Marion. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 am until the time of service on Wednesday.
The service is available virtually at zoom.us, click the “join meeting” tab then enter the meeting number 765-490-4234 and the password: tmg2020.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nazarene Missionary Society, P.O. Box 384, Van Buren, IN 46991.
